GREEN SCULPTURE  – BALANCE

The color green signifies life, growth, renewal and health.  It’s a color widely used to represent nature and our environment.

It’s the color of balance and stability.  It’s restful and calming but it can also be used negatively…green with envy or the green-eyed monster.

It can have both a warm and cool effect when using it to decorate a room.

There are many shades of green and use several shades together for a fresh feel.

Green is commonly associated with St Patrick’s Day.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

HOME REMODEL: BEFORE AND AFTER VIDEO AND PHOTOS

March 25, 2011

Back to Website

HOME REMODEL

Before the kitchen remodel it was dated and cluttered.  The homeowner’s wanted a clean, contemporary style with an organic feel.  On their wish list was a larger island that offered more storage and a large countertop for baking cookies.  New appliances, sink and lighting were also high on their priority list.  The new design also needed to accommodate an area for a flat screen TV and other small appliances in order to get them off of the countertop.

We accomplished their style request by choosing bamboo cabinetry with satin granite countertops.  The granite used is called Victoria Regia, which certainly lends itself to an organic look.  To add color and interest we covered the backsplash with glass mosaic tiles in jewel tones.  All of the plug outlets were hidden to create a “clean” backsplash design.  The island was turned around and designed larger to accommodate deep drawers for storage and a large countertop for baking.  New pendant lights were installed above the island’s sitting area.  Under cabinet and above cabinet lighting was also installed for ambiance.

The tall cabinetry was made slightly higher to add interest.  A cabinet was designed especially to hold a flat screen TV. Below the TV is a cabinet to store small appliances, therefore leaving the countertops clutter free.  An integrated Sub Zero refrigerator was incorporated with a cabinet panel to give a seamless look.  The microwave, wall oven, wine refrigerator and the induction cook top are all from Electrolux.  The dishwasher is by Bosch.  The double-bowl sink is silgranit in the color Anthracite (black) with an oil rubbed faucet and R/O faucet, which appear black and work nicely with the sink color.

The old fireplace was dated and the base was too large for the area in which it stood.  We made the base smaller and covered it with travertine tiles, which match the flooring.  We re-designed the fireplace making it an open style with a flat burner that now holds glass chips.  The walls of the fireplace were covered with thin stacked stone in shades of green and brown.  The new fireplace is modernized and works much better with the new kitchen and flooring.

In the entry and great room we installed new travertine tile, which was also installed throughout the entire house creating a nice flow.  The pillars were painted in a deep shade of brown that coordinates well with the front entry door, laundry room door and the cabinetry.  In the great room a “picture frame” carpet was installed and bordered with natural river rock stones.  New glass and metal sconces hang on the walls and a semi-flush fixture hangs in the entryway, which compliments the sconces.  An awesome glass river rock pendant cluster hangs above the kitchen eating / sitting area, which worked well with the river rock floor border.  The ceilings were painted a warm white color (they were yellow) which worked much better with the yellow colored faux walls.  If I had my way I would have changed the wall color because I felt the color was too bold and over powering for the new materials used.  However, the homeowner’s really liked the existing color and over ruled me.  Their happiness is what is most important!

The master bathroom needed a complete revamp, too.  It was very dated and cluttered.  The vanity was too small with not enough storage and the corner medicine cabinet was an eye sore.

We removed the low pony wall which allowed more space for a larger vanity and more room for the tub area.  A new marble countertop was installed and two Zen vessel sinks sit nicely atop.  The faucets were set on the sides of each sink for interest and convenience.  Plus we had to allow space for the two medicine cabinet doors to open, they’re behind and part of the mirror.  New light fixtures were installed above each sink providing ample lighting, as well as a nice look for the room.  Walls of blue, white and brown mosaic glass tiles were used to add color and flair.  The other walls were faux painted with pearl white paint.

A chandelier made out of flight paper hangs above the tub.  The oval freestanding soaking tub is made of volcanic limestone by Victoria and Albert.  We added a backrest for comfort while soaking.  A tall sleek floor faucet completes the look.  The tub was off center before and cramped into the corner and now the new tub is the perfect size for the corner and just  right for the petite homeowner.

A clear glass panel separates the tub and shower.  The glass panel sits on a block of marble, which is used as a bench for the Mrs.  The new shower was made larger and is covered from floor to ceiling with glass mosaic tiles.  The new glass enclosure is clear to show off the tile work and also the glass door that leads to a new outdoor shower (A must for the Mr).  Custom niches were also designed to hold toiletries.

The outdoor shower was built because the Mr likes to be one with nature.  The walls were constructed and covered with the same glass mosaic tiles as the inside shower, creating a continuous look from one to the other.  A new light fixture and towel hook were also added for convenience.

The master bedroom was also revamped with new travertine flooring and pearl white faux painted walls.  But the most striking is the authentic sky ceiling with an LED light tray that encompasses the entire room.  The blue sky works nicely with the blue tile in the master bath and both rooms were transformed into a beautiful spa-like atmosphere.

HOME DECORATING – ALL ABOUT HEADBOARDS

March 1, 2011

HeadboardsHome Decorating - ALL ABOUT HEADBOARDS –

By Cheryl Sandella / Sandella Custom Homes & Interiors

Did you know that by having a headboard it can determine your night’s rest?  So how did you sleep last night?  If you were tossing and turning it could be because your bed doesn’t have anything sturdy behind it…like a headboard.  Getting a good night’s sleep is needed to ensure that we have the energy to perform well during the day.

Black headboardExperts in Feng Shui strongly urge us to have a sturdy headboard to anchor the bed to the wall.  Feng Shui is the art of placement as it relates to the flow of energy.  To create a “positive” energy flow in the bedroom, a must is to have the headboard against a solid wall.  The material used to create the headboard is also important in Feng Shui and must be considered when designing/decorating a bedroom.   The experts say brass or iron headboards can cause headaches and give a feeling of lack of stability, due to their openness design.  They highly recommend choosing a headboard that is made out of a solid material, such as upholstery or wood.  They claim there is a strong correlation between lack of sleep and the wrong headboard or worse off no headboard at all.

Purple BedThe headboard is the “focal Point” of your bedroom, along with the bed, and without one the room looks unfinished.  The headboard style sets the tone for your entire bedroom design so it’s important to give it the attention it needs by creating one that has style.

Tall Custom HeadboardIn years past the headboard’s roll was to help keep pillows and linens in place but In today’s world of custom interior design, headboards are being created with upholstered materials such as leather, ultra suede, silk, natural fibers, faux textiles and many other fine fabrics to make a personal statement in the room.  All bedrooms should be designed with a headboard regardless of their size.  In fact, the right headboard style could actually make a smaller room feel more spacious as it adds height and substance to the room.  Wood is another good choice for a headboard as it is very versatile.  There are many types of wood and finishes to choose from and it can be carved to form different shapes.  A wood-upholstered combination headboard will certainly make a stunning statement in the room.

Rec Velvet HeadboardSince there are so many design options for headboards I’m designing less of the “matchy” headboards that match the casement furniture.  The trend to keep the headboard and footboard separate from the other furniture allows more freedom and creativity when decorating the bedroom.  The bed is the main attraction in the room and it deserves a stylish headboard and footboard, if desired.

Headboard with crystal nail headsSince the headboard has become the starting point of the decorating scheme for the bedroom, it’s wise to know all of the options available.  Headboards can be designed in many shapes with embellishments added for panache.  My favorite headboard to design is the upholstered styles because with so many fine fabrics and styles to choose from I can be very creative.  Below are some of the steps and decorating tips that I use when designing a headboard.

First I choose a design style that works with the design scheme of the bedroom I plan to create.  The styles to choose from are:  Square, Arc, Curved Corner, Camel or Custom.  For a contemporary style, I would choose Square, Arc for transitional and curved corners or camel for traditional.  Custom style is any shape I want to create, for example instead of square I can create a headboard that is wavy at the top or is extra wide or high.

 Square Headboard

 Arc Headboard

 Curved Corners

Camel Headboard

Next I choose the height.  The height I choose varies depending on the room but usually somewhere between 56” to 70” tall.  If I want to make a statement then I may choose a lower height, or to add some drama I may take it to the ceiling.

Then I choose the upholstery panel treatment it can be plain, button tufted, tufted without buttons or tufted with large squares, etc.

The next step is to choose the fabric.  I do this by coordinating a fabric with the bedding or sometimes with the furniture.

Wood Framed Headboard The last step is the border detail.  My options are to add a welt treatment around the border or for a more dramatic look I can add nail heads to the border.  Some headboards I design don’t have a defined border and some are bordered in wood.

Tuffed HeadboardThis is the part of the design where I can get very creative and I may decide to frame an upholstered headboard in wood, I may do a flat panel style and create a design in the center from nail heads.  Mixing fabrics is fun for example the frame could be one fabric and the border could be another and that fabric border could be shirred.    The possibilities are endless when creating a custom headboard

A new stylish headboard is what you’re bedding could be dreaming of.  A headboard will not only give the bedroom a chic new style but you may even get a good night’s sleep from it!

Top 7 Decorating Mistakes

July 2, 2010

TOP 7 DECORATING MISTAKES by Cheryl Sandella

Being an interior designer for over 25 years I’m quite familiar with the most common mistakes most people make (even some professionals) when decorating a home.  Decorating should reflect our taste and style, and it is a very personal thing.  However there are a few decorating blunders that should be avoided.   Below is a list of mistakes and fixes.

The Line UpMISTAKE 1:  The Line Up…lining up the furniture on one wall.  I see this done a lot especially in bedrooms, where several different size dressers are all shoved against one wall.  This creates a “cluttered” look and feel.  It’s also unbalanced.

THE FIX:   Be sure to measure the space and the dimensions of the furniture you’ll be placing on each wall.  Place one main piece of furniture on a wall.  You want to make sure the room looks and feels balanced.  Also, be sure to leave enough “walk room” between the bed and the furniture.  You don’t want to be bumping into things if you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.  Scale is very important here.

Good PlacementMISTAKE 2:  Furniture Placement…many people think pushing the living room sofa against the wall and by having the open space in the center of the room will make the room appear larger…False.  This type of arrangement makes it difficult to carry on a conversation.

THE FIX:  Since the sofa is the largest piece in the room it should be placed in the center and across from either the entertainment wall or fireplace (the focal point). Rearrange the other pieces around the sofa to create an intimate setting that is more conversational.  (group all piece in the center of the room) Make sure you’re TV is hung/placed at eye level and the sofa is placed at the correct distance from the TV.  The distance depends on the size of the TV and your preference.  A good rule of thumb is to take the size of the TV and multiply it by 1.5.  For example, if you have a 42” Flat Screen TV, you would multiply 42 x 1.5 = 63” or 5’1/4”.  If you feel that it’s still too close you can move your sofa back to about 6’.  The larger the TV the further back the sofa should go.  So it’s important to know your room size before purchasing a TV.  (measure to the back seat of the sofa)

Some rooms are too small for this configuration, if you have to place the sofa against a wall be sure to group the other pieces around the sofa…don’t push the chair against another wall, etc.

Upon entry you see the back of the sofa…that’s a great place for a console table to be placed with a few accessories displayed.

Fear of ColorMISTAKE 3:  Fear of Color…when I first moved to the dessert I was shocked at how many beige / cream colored houses I went to.  Floors, walls, ceilings and furniture were all beige, which tends to look boring and lacks creativity.  Many of the clients told me that they love color but were afraid to use it.  Many think using a paint color, other than off white; will make the room look smaller and be difficult to match with furniture.

THE FIX:  Use your favorite colors!  I recommend selecting the upholstery and window treatments first.   You can start with a palette of three colors in different shades and contrast – you can have one dark deep color, complimented by lighter colors.  Select the main color followed by accent colors.  Darker colors tend to ground while lighter colors tend to float.   Don’t use all jewel tones or pastels – mix it up.  After those selections are made then the paint color can be selected.  It is best to select a few colors and paint them on the wall in the room.  Stay with it for a day or so and see how the color looks in the natural light and nighttime light, then select.  The goal of paint color is to enhance the other colors being used and to create a mood.  You can use paint color to make something pop or to create a soft glow.  But always surround yourself in the colors you love.

Too Many PrintsMISTAKE 4:  Too Many Patterns… using too many patterns can become distracting to the eye, busy and overbearing.  However, you don’t want to be “matchy-matchy” either.  There are many ways to introduce patterns to the décor of a room but there is also a fine line with how many to use and where.

THE FIX:  I love to decorate a room with different patterns, it creates interest.  However, you must stay true to your color palette and plan. Use patterns and prints very specifically to support the main color and draw attention to the accent colors.  Mix it up with a blend of solid colors, prints, different textures and materials.

Artwork too HighMISTAKE 5:  Hanging Artwork Too High…you shouldn’t have to strain the neck and eyes to view art.  In most situations art should be hung at eye level for proper viewing and balance.

THE FIX:  I see this mistake often, art being hung way too high.   Art needs to be hung at eye level; the main feature of the art (or center) should be at eye level.  Since we’re all different heights, you can use this as a guideline…hang art approximately 60” above the floor, 8”–12” above a sofa, chair or headboard.  6” – 8” inches for a mirror above a chest.  In contemporary settings I prefer to hang art a little lower than in traditional settings.   But don’t go too low because that doesn’t look good either.

Wrong Window TreatmentMISTAKE 6:  Hanging Window Treatments Too Low…I see this mistake often too.  In most homes the art is hung too high and the window treatments are hung too low.

THE FIX:  I consider window treatments “jewelry” for the window.  The goal is to dress up the window, add some bling and drama.  Therefore you don’t want to stay in the constraints of the window size.  The higher the curtain is installed the taller your room will appear.  Hanging drapes at ceiling height will give a dramatic effect on the entire room.  For the length, go ½” to 1” above the floor or make the drapes longer to “puddle” on the floor for a little drama.  If you don’t want to go to the floor, than go just below the window molding. (in some cases you can touch the window sill) I don’t like drapes ending midway on a wall because it looks like you ran out of fabric and the flow is wrong.

ClutterMISTAKE 7:  Too Many Knickknacks…I think it’s important to display personal collections, things that you love to look at or have sentimental value.  However, you can’t display all of them or have collections displayed in too many places, it becomes too messy and cluttered looking.

THE FIX:   If you do have a collection of knickknacks that you want to display select one area, cabinet or wall and display a few of your favorites.  You can store the others and rotate them seasonally.  It’s important to use accessories when decorating to bring the room together, to add some bling and drama but again don’t add too many.   It’s best not to have too many small items on display.  Instead use fewer but larger pieces that add impact and create drama.  It’s important to have “negative space” so you don’t have to cover everything with a knickknack.  In most cases…LESS IS MORE!

CHERYL’S PET PEEVES:

  • Toilet Rugs – unsanitary
  • Too Many Focal Points – don’t know what to look at first…just have one
  • Electrical Cord and Cable Wires – messy…tack them up
  • Too Many Personal Photos – display some and use photo albums for the remainder
  • Buying the “Display” at a Furniture Store – it never looks right in the home…either the scale is wrong or the pieces are too matchy
  • Floating Area Rugs – measure to get the correct size for your area rug…it should always “connect” to the furniture or fit the room leaving 12”-16” of floor space around the rug…for the dining room…the chairs should fit on the rug
  • Cheap Plastic or Fake Plants/Flowers – this is one area that you must buy a high grade or use real
  • Vertical Blinds – outdated
  • Using Things You No Longer Like – it’s important to surround yourself with things that you love and make you feel good  (use the wall space in your garage for things you can’t part with)

Good DesignWhen decorating a home it’s imperative to have a plan and budget.  When you have a plan and budget you’re going to make better decisions and purchases.   I find that most people struggle with scale and proportion when selecting furniture.  Use books, Internet and furniture showrooms to gather ideas and to get familiar with what works.  Visualization is difficult for most people and if you’re really stuck it is best to call in a professional.   In the long run you’ll save time and money but most important you’ll get the job done right.   Hiring a professional can turn a stressful project into an enjoyable one!
